Tal como lo anunciamos en Noticiencia de Setiembre el Instituto Nacional

Board gives partial nod to acupuncture
BETHESDA, Md. - A National Institute of Medicine expert committee gave
limited medical endorsement
Wednesday to acupuncture, saying that the ancient Chinese needle treatment
is effective for relieving surgical
pain and chemotherapy nausea.
A statement evaluating the usefulness of acupuncture by a panel of scientists
selected by the National Institute
of Health said ''there is clear evidence that needle acupuncture''
is effective in treating surgical and dental pain
and relieving nausea, but there is less evidence that it is effective
against ailments ranging from tennis elbow to
carpal tunnel syndrome.
''The data in support of acupuncture are as strong as those for many
accepted Western medical therapies,'' the
panel's report said.
The report moves acupuncture, which has occupied a shadowy fringe on
the edge of American medicine for
more than 20 years, to a treatment that can reasonably be chosen by
U.S. physicians.
Acupuncture involves sticking thin needles into strategic nerve junctions
around the body. It has been practiced
in China for more than 2000 years and captured interest in this country
only after the 1972 visit to China of
President Nixon. Since then, several thousand medical doctors have
received training in the technique and are
offering it to their patients.
