Well, the 1998 IgNobel Prize Awards are announced.  This annual recognition
of bad or silly science was something I'd only read about, but last night I
attended as a presenter at the hall in Boston.  The Chemistry Award went to
a scientist who had already won a previous Ignobel, the first time there's
ever been a two-time winner.  For his claim that the magic of homeopathy
can be transmitted as digital data, not only over a telephone line, but via
the Internet, Dr. Jacques Benveniste of France was the winner.  And the
prize for Physics went this year to Dr. Deepak Chopra, whose use of quantum
physics to explain how the human body works and can be cured, astonished
scientists the world over.  Emily Rosa, the young girl who challenged the
Therapeutic Touch people to prove the existence of the claimed Human Energy
Field, accepted -- on behalf of Dolores Krieger, the discoverer and teacher
of TT -- the IgNobel Prize for contributing so much to the career of a
budding scientist, herself.

It was a fun evening indeed!
