Acupuncture is commonly used by patients with chronic, painful
musculoskeletal disorders. There are few placebo controlled studies to
prove
its efficacy. A randomised placebo controlled crossover trial in a
Rheumatology Outpatients setting was conducted to determine whether
acupuncture is a useful treatment adjunct in the management of
patients with
rheumatoid arthritis. 64 patients were centrally randomised to receive
either treatment sequence A (acupuncture followed by placebo) or
sequence B
(placebo followed by acupuncture). 56 patients were studied, all on
second
line therapy, aged 18 to 75 years.
Single point acupuncture or placebo was given with an intervening
washout
period of 6 weeks. Patient, acupuncturist and statistician were
blinded as
far as possible. Visual analogue scale of pain and global patient
assessment, 28 swollen joint count and tender joint count, general
health
questionnaire and modified DAS index, together with ESR and CRP were the
outcome measures used.
No significant effect of treatment or period and no significant
interaction
between treatment and period were found for any of the outcome
variables. No
adverse effects were reported.
Acupuncture cannot be considered a useful adjunct to therapy in patients
with rheumatoid arthritis.
