At the present time, the consensus view is that life originated
at the surface of the Earth, and that if life exists on other
planets it is also a surface phenomenon. Thomas Gold (Cornell
University US), an astrophysicist who with Hermann Bondi and Fred
Hoyle was one of the creators (1948) of the "steady-state"
cosmology theory, has recently proposed that sub-surface origins
of planetary life ought to be considered. Gold points out that
the popular view that natural petroleum is a modified biogenic
product is not on firm ground, and that a reasonable argument can
be made that the biological hydrocarbons in petroleum may have
actually been introduced into petroleum by sub-surface microbial
life when oil rose from 150 kilometer levels to 10 kilometer
surface levels. His argument is that if this is so, then it is
possible there is abundant sub-surface microbial life on other
planets, and that our examination of surface conditions on these
planets may be only an incomplete survey of extraterrestrial
