The Road to Infertility

Professional drivers beware! Your occupation may be making you infertile.
Research by French fertility experts has provided the strongest evidence yet
to back the hypothesis that long hours behind the wheel is detrimental to
the driver's sperm production. A number of prior studies have shown that
compared to other men sperm counts in professional drivers are lower, that
their sperm has more abnormalities and that their partners take longer to
conceive.

Doctors have always assumed this was to do with rising temperatures in the
men's scrotums, and the French study bears this out. Scientists in Toulouse
attached temperature probes to the scrotums of nine volunteers. They then
took a short walk to establish a baseline, before hopping into a car and
driving for 160 minutes. The results tracked an initially rapid rise in
temperature before things stabilised at an average 2°C above normal after 2
hours of driving. That's more than enough to affect the function of the
testes, which, to optimise production, are situated outside of the body's
core to keep them a couple of degrees cooler.
