"Synergy" is a term tossed about often in Hollywood and in the upper reaches of publishing, but not often seen in the creative efforts of individual authors. But Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman have put together a plan for a series of books, a Web site, a game, and--most exciting--reader involvement in the development of the series itself! Here Tracy Hickman introduces the new Starshield novel, Nightsword, and details the ways readers can participate in (and contribute to) the development of the Starshield universe themselves.

More on Nightsword.

PHILIP JOSE FARMER, whose five-book classic Riverworld series will return to bookstores this summer (in deluxe trade paperback editions), has turned in the manuscript for THE DARK HEART OF TIME, a brand-new Tarzan fantasy that blends the quirky Farmer style with the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs approach to adventure.

DAVID GEMMELL'S latest book, IN THE REALM OF THE WOLF, is the first of three returning readers to the Drenai cycle that includes the international bestseller, LEGEND. The next two are DRUSS THE LEGEND and THE LEGEND OF DEATHWALKER. Meanwhile, his recent Drenai novel, WINTER WARRIORS, was published in hardcover in Britain, and made it to #8 on the Sunday Times bestseller list. His new novel, ECHOES OF THE GREAT SONG, is complete, revised and edited, and will be published in October. The Drenai series is now being published in the former Soviet bloc, in Russia and the Czech Republic. His next novel is provisionally titled THE STORM SWORD, and begins a two-book saga, after which David plans to return once again to the Drenai saga loved by legions of his fans.

LOIS GRESH and her co-author ROBERT WEINBERG have completed a taut new technothriller titled THE TERMINATION NODE, which will reveal the deadly threat the Internet poses to international banking, especially when advanced computer code falls into the wrong hands. For another publisher, Gresh and Weinberg have also signed to lend their unique abilities to a book on the computers of Star Trek.

HARRY HARRISON is working on the second book of his Stars and Stripes alternate-history trilogy for Del Rey.

JANE KILLICK's popular British BABYLON 5 SEASON-BY-SEASON guides have just made their United States debut with the first two installments, SIGNS AND PORTENTS and THE COMING OF SHADOWS. Book three, POINT OF NO RETURN, is slated for July and NO SURRENDER, NO RETREAT will be coming in the fall. Killick is in the midst of research on the fifth book--covering the fifth season--right now.

WIL McCARTHY has begun work on a neat new hard-sf novel for Del Rey. BLOOM will be out in September.

DANIEL WALLACE has turned in STAR WARS: THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO DROIDS for 1999 release. This edition in the Essential Guide series will perfectly complement THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO VEHICLES AND VESSELS, as well as THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO WEAPONS AND TECHNOLOGY. Wallace is the author of STAR WARS: THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO PLANETS AND MOONS, the fourth volume in the phenomenally popular series, slated for summer 1998.

KATIE WAITMAN is working on a sequel to her first novel, THE MERRO TREE.
