The two-and-a-half year program to develop the robotic bugs is part of a
larger program funded by America's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency
(dARPa). The aim is to explore the potential of mobile micro-robots for
military reconnaissance and intelligence gathering. Ideally, soldiers could
be able to carry large numbers of these lightweight, mechanical scouts and
use them for probing the terrain ahead, detecting enemy troops, minefields
and other hazards.
